The medical profession is one of the most rewarding industries to work in – it is also very unique.

Comprising 15 comprehensive and interactive lessons, this course has been developed to help you get under the skin of commonly used medical terminology across a wide range of disciplines including biology, cardiology, psychology and many more. You will be guided through each speciality step-by-step and learn how seemingly complicated medical jargon is built up from word roots, prefixes and suffixes, so this language becomes second nature to you.

We want to ensure you find your training path as easy as possible so, as with our standard training method, this course can be studied at times to suit you and at your own pace meaning you can fit your training around your existing work and life commitments.

Through a series of self-paced, comprehensive lessons you’ll work through each medical specialism and learn the terminology frequently used within each area. You’ll learn how the words are formed and become so familiar with it that it becomes second nature to you.

The course will take you to such a level that you’ll also be well placed to go on to achieve the City & Guilds Level 2 Award in Medical Terminology qualification (additional home study is recommended).

This course is ideal for anyone who is wanting to work within a GP Practice, hospital or any other medical establishment and who wants to quickly learn the terminology that is frequently used. So if you’re wanting to become a Medical Secretary, Medical Office Manager or work in a Medical Records Department, knowing the terminology will help you quickly get to grips with the systems.

There are 15 lessons within this course, each covering a different medical speacialism: –

Module 1: Overview of the medical specialities, introduction to word units.
Module 2: Structure of the body, cells tissues, organs and systems.
Module 3: Orthopaedics.
Module 4: Cardiology.
Module 5: The Respiratory System.
Module 6: Female Reproduction.
Module 7: Male Reproduction.
Module 8: Urology.
Module 9: Gastroenterology.
Module 10: The Lymphatic System and Immunology.
Module 11: Dermatology.
Module 12: Neurology
Module 13: Psychiatry and Psychology
Module 14: Ophthalmology and ENT
Module 15: Prescription and drug abbreviations. Consolidation of terminology covered in the course.

This course will take around 35 hours to work through. You will also need to allow extra time for additional study.

Our Medical Terminology course is part of our distance learning range – which can be accessed online via our distance learning portal. 

This means that you have the flexibility to study our Medical Terminology course:

  • In centre, with our friendly course advisors available for support and guidance as and when you need it.
  • At home or from work – with support via email or telephone during working hours.
  • On a blended mix – in-centre for the modules you need help with, at home or from work for those you are gliding through.

Once you’ve decided to go ahead, all you’ll need to do is contact your nearest Pitman Training centre that offers and supports our distance learning platform, and they will arrange for you to have an induction to show you around the system and talk you through how our online training works. After this, you can learn in your own time and at your own speed, but with the knowledge you have support at hand if required.
